Somerset Dementia Book Collections

Books on PrescriptionPeople with dementia, and anyone affected by the condition, can dip into a collection of books at libraries across Somerset.

The 25 titles in the ‘Reading Well: Books on Prescription for dementia’ which is a national initiative have all been recommended by health experts and tested by people with experience of dementia, and they join the existing ‘Somerset Dementia Collection’ set up by Public Health in partnership with Somerset Library Service in 2013. The new titles include books providing information and advice, living well with dementia, support for relatives and carers, personal stories and books for children.

However you can also take books out yourself without being prescribed one, and they can be ordered free of charge at any Somerset library or via

All libraries hold the Books on Prescription for Dementia book list and the Somerset Dementia Collection book list and the book loan period is an extended period of 6 weeks.

Or if you prefer you can pop in to one of the main libraries and have a browse if you don’t wish to take a book out.

We hope both schemes help support those with memory problems and dementia, their carers and families.

  • If you are worried, either about your own or someone else's memory, Alzheimer's Society has a factsheet that can help you understand more about memory loss.
